As a result, they tend to use certain terms interchangeably.

In this article, I would like to highlight the following concepts:

Energy is possessed OR stored in an object (internal)

A force is acting on an object (external).

Question

To answer the question above, the rough strips CANNOT possess friction. Rather, the presence of the rough strips INCREASES the friction between the surface of the elderly’s shoes AND the stairs.

However, submitting this answer will only earn the student 1/2 mark, instead of the full 1 mark, because it is an incomplete answer.

Why?

The student will need to relate his/her explanation back to the question and further add: This would prevent the elderly from slipping and falling easily when walking up or down the flight of stairs.
