P5 Parent Workshop Takeaways

Gain exposure to a wide range of key heuristics/problem-solving techniques to tackle challenging questions from the P5 Math syllabus!

Session 1: Whole Numbers

🧠 Model Drawing Techniques
Learn the best practices of model-drawing which include:

  • Stacking models for comparison

  • Dotted lines for addition

  • Double corner lines indicating subtraction

  • Making parts equal

🔁 Change Strategies (Model Drawing)
Discover a powerful strategy to break down multi-step problems:

  • At First

  • Change

  • End

We’ll show you how to use two separate models for better clarity — then transition to a single model once your child gains confidence.

🧩 Repeated Identity (Whole Numbers)
Handle tricky comparison questions involving 3 identities by identifying the repeated item and using it as an anchor in your working.

⚖️ Gap & Difference
Learn how to tackle scenarios involving excess and shortage using:

  • Model method

  • Systematic listing method

🧮 Assumption
Use logical reasoning and assumptions to approach specific question types.

📦 Grouping
Identify and group related items in the question and count by groups to find the total or solve for the difference in a question

Session 2: Fractions

🍰 Remainder Concept
We’ll teach you how to solve questions using models (and branching for higher-ability students) for questions involving remainders.

🔁 Change Strategies (Unitary Method)
Identify and apply the right approach for these question types:

  • One Item Unchanged

  • Total Unchanged

  • Difference Unchanged

🧩 Repeated Identity (Fractions)
Handle tricky Fractions comparison questions involving 3 identities by identifying the repeated item.

🟰 Numerator The Same
Power through tricky problem sums with fractions involving the same numerator!

🔙 Working Backwards
Learn the step by step approach of dissecting long problem sums by starting from the end and working backwards.

⭐️ Final Review

We’ll walk you through selected long-answer questions from two past year exam papers to:
✅ Help you identify question types
✅ Apply the correct strategies
✅ Gain confidence guiding your child at home

Here’s What You Can Expect In The P5 Math Parent Workshop

Meet Your Workshop Trainer: Mr. Kenneth Mak

Co-founder, Academic Director & PSLE Math Specialist at The Pique Lab

“P5 Math doesn’t have to be scary, not when you know how to break it down.

My goal is to make complex problems feel simple, even fun — so you can help your child learn faster, apply better, and enjoy the learning process.”

Mr. Kenneth is the co-founder & PSLE Math Specialist of The Pique Lab. When it comes to primary Math, he is the go-to guy!

With more than 16 years of teaching experience, he has experimented with plenty of studying strategies & answering techniques to help them learn Math easier, better and faster. His deep understanding of what works and what doesn't allows him to clarify doubts effectively and break down each complex problem sum into bite-sized, easy-to-grasp concepts.

He believes that a good teacher needs to be a good communicator. As such, he constantly seeks to work on his public speaking skillset in order to present the best version of himself to and for his students.

Seasoned by experience, he is known among parents for his engaging analogies that inspires fun in learning, building rapport with his students & helping them achieve tremendous academic results in the shortest period of time.

A Sneak Peek Of Mr. Kenneth’s Math Lessons!

Sharing best practices of solving One Item Unchanged questions with the model & unitary method

With our 5 model drawing tips, your child will be practising how to draw models faster and better to tackle new P5 Math question types!

While model drawing is useful, your child will start to encounter Math problem sums that involve complex and tedious models.

Instead of relying on the model method, your child will be learning how to use the unitary method and ACE™ methodology to solve these more complex question types!
