By Kenneth Mak, Founder Of The Pique Lab

Yes. You read right.

Certs, qualifications or experience are not necessary to succeed in this business.

All you need is passion, drive and desire.

Take Mervin (my co-founder) and me for example.

We started The Pique Lab in 2013 while studying in Singapore Management University (SMU).

At the time, we only had minimal teaching experience as private tutors.

We were IT and economics students. Totally not related to education at all.

To be honest, the early years were tough. Brutal. Full of struggles.

(We fondly call it the sh*t years, more on that below )

Eventually, we figured things out. We worked out butts off. We made things happen.

Today, The Pique Lab is a 7-figure company.

We’re projected to cross 8-figures within the next 3 years.

From just the 2 of us, we now have a growing team of 70+.

It has certainly been an eventful ride!

And how exactly did we do it?

There’re plenty of key factors.

But the 3 most important ones are like I said – Passion. Drive. Desire.

Do you possess those traits too, just like we did and still do?

If yes, we need your help!

For us to cross that 8-figure mark, we need team members with those simple but magical qualities.

In return, we’ll mentor you closely, and pass on the skillsets you need to enjoy a career as a highly sought-after science teacher.

It’s a win-win!

What Our Teachers Say About Their Careers At The Pique Lab

Ms. Joanna Nazarene
Senior Associate (NTU BSc, Chemistry)

Helped Me Understand My Students’ Needs Better

One thing that the training programme taught me was how to teach in an asking manner, instead of telling.

This allowed me to improve my questioning style which opened my eyes to really understand students’ needs better. It’s always a two-way interaction between me and my students.

When your students enjoy your class, understand the analogies you share and laugh at your jokes, it feels like all the hard work has paid off. You’ve got to learn, practice and present the content with a touch of your own style of course!

Ms. Cheryl Ng
Senior Associate (NUS BSc, Chemistry)

Family-like Culture That Cares For Each Other

The Pique Lab’s teaching team has a family-like culture. Every teacher genuinely cares for each other and I like that we have each other’s backs—we look out for one another, which is something that I’m thankful for.

While the work is challenging, the environment is nurturing. We are quite collaborative as we work with the other departments as well, like the video editors and designers.

I also appreciate the a sense of belonging, which makes it easy to work quickly and effectively with others. It’s reassuring to know that everyone pulls their weight and is doing their best for the company.”

Ms. Jolie Goh
Senior Associate (NUS BBA)

Get To Explore Different Facets of Education

I guess the good thing about the Pique Lab is that there are opportunities to explore different facets of education that go beyond teaching – planning the curriculum, creating new materials, new ways to deliver the materials better.

As a Lead Training Specialist, I’ve found a flair in guiding others and providing mentorship for newer teachers. And in doing so, I get to re-examine and refine my own teaching strategies. I then share best practices with newer teachers, helping them in their learning too. , and for me, is growing the team – finding teachers that are able to use the tools that we have to bring it to the students.”

The Pique Lab Origins: How Did 2 “Noobs” Create A 7 Going On 8-Figure Education Business?

As I mentioned above, the early years were sh*t years 💩.

We had no idea how to run or grow a business at all.

We were trying everything with nothing to show.

It was depressing. And frankly, we were THIS CLOSE to throwing in the towel.

Especially since our school work and social lives were negatively impacted.

It was certainly not easy juggling assignments, friends and business!

Thankfully, we persevered.

Because we could see The Pique Lab’s potential.

And we really wanted to do our own thing, instead of working a typical 9-5 job.

Long story short…

It Was The Pique Lab, Or Nothing

What we lacked in knowledge at the time, we made up for it with good old fashioned hustling.

Thinking back, some of the things we did to get students were pretty laughable!

I remember us “camping” outside schools during Parent-Teacher Meetings.

We would ambush startled parents, and asked as politely as we could, if their children needed extra science lessons.

Did that go well for us?

Well, obviously not.

We were even chased away by many times by prefects and teachers, who saw as pesky “crashers” who needed to be stopped!

But we learned. We improved. We refined our approach.

And We Finally Figured Things Out…Sort Of

Our 1st location was at Goldhill Plaza; a dingy, run-down unit we only took because it was all we could afford.

Still, plenty of memories were created there.

None more memorable than my weekly seminars on how to score well for science exams.

There were times we only had less than 3 parent attendees.

Even more occasions when parents said yes when we called, but did not show up.

Was it a little demoralising?

Definitely.

Was it worth continuing with this seemingly fruitless endeavour?

Of course!

Because through the strength of our content, parents eventually took notice.

They told their friends to attend. And those friends told their friends to attend.

Eventually, we were conducting full-house seminars week after week!

And many parents signed up for our classes after that too.

Our student numbers surged to the point that the small unit at Goldhill Plaza couldn’t accommodate our rapid growth any longer.

It was time for bigger and better things.

Introducing The Pique Lab’s Home For The Last Few Years…

Our new location at Serene Centre was around 3 times bigger.

Perfect for our scaling up strategy!

After years of plodding along, we could finally see our masterplan coming to fruition.

As Serene Centre is in the heart of Bukit Timah, close to Singapore’s “education-belt”, a sizable new customer base opened up.

So we got in more students. Helped many of them achieve top marks for science exams. Even enabled them to fall in love with the subject.

Our reputation increased massively as a result.

We became known as one of Singapore’s leading science enrichment providers.

And we got featured in several mainstream media because of our expertise.

That’s Why I’m Writing This Message To You Today

Over the last 8 years, The Pique Lab has grown by leaps and bounds.

We’ve helped more than 10,000 students, many of whom went on to score As and A*s in their PSLE science exams.

What started as just 2 of us, is now a 60-strong team.

It may seem like fine achievements for most.

But to me and Mervin, we’re just getting started.

We’ve barely scratched the surface.

We have much bigger plans in the years to come.

And to fulfil those plans and achieve our lofty goals…

We need you.

Someone driven. Passionate. Motivated.

Someone who loves teaching.

Someone looking for much more than a regular 9-5 job.

You can help us.

Just as much as we can help you.

It’s going to be an exciting ride.

And we would love for you to join The Pique Lab Family!

One Last Thing Before You Register Your Interest…

We don’t have time for passengers.

We don’t have the capacity to “carry” non-performers.

We don’t have room for stragglers.

Especially since we have major plans in store.

All our team members need to pull their weight.

To contribute. To play a part. To make a difference.

Your attitude needs to be right.

As mentioned right at the start, you need passion, drive and desire.

Don’t think that this is a typical 9-5 job.

It’s a lot more demanding. A lot more challenging.

But also a lot more rewarding.

Both in terms of personal development and income potential.

My promise to you: If you’re willing to put in the effort, we’ll be there with you every step of the way. To mentor you. To train you. To nurture you.

So we can work towards our mutual goals, together.

Sounds good? I certainly hope so!
