Procrastination is the bane of every student\u2019s life! It tempts students away from the task they set out to complete thus creating fear and anxiety within them as the deadline of their respective projects draws closer. The act of procrastination does seem enjoyable but the joy is short-lived as nothing is accomplished!<\/p>\n

    As parents, we are fearful that our children may succumb to the act of procrastination. In severe cases, procrastination can distract your children from being able to reach their full potential in life and possibly affecting their career in the future.<\/p>\n

    This sounds scary<\/em>, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n

    We understand and recognise the detrimental effects of procrastination and we do not want your children to fall into the false comfort procrastination brings about.<\/p>\n

    Here are 3 simple ways<\/span> to help your children to overcome procrastination and be masters of their own time:<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    #1: Recognising Procrastination<\/span><\/h2>\n

    To overcome procrastination, we have to be able to recognise it.<\/p>\n

    Many students often do not realise that they are procrastinating until it is too late. Time would already be wasted with little work being accomplished.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Here are some symptoms of procrastination:<\/span><\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. Your child tends to complete only low priority tasks.<\/li>\n
    2. Your child tends to switch to a less meaningful task despite setting his\/ her mind on completing a high priority task.<\/li>\n
    3. Your child tends to leave a task uncompleted on his\/ her To-Do list for excessive periods of time.<\/li>\n
    4. Your child regularly says \u201cYes\u201d to every task but is not completing any of it.<\/li>\n
    5. Your child prefers to wait for the \u201cRight Moment\u201d or the \u201cRight Mood\u201d before he\/ she embarks on the task. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      If your child is exhibiting any of the symptoms above, BEWARE<\/span>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Your child may be guilty of procrastinating. It is good that they are now able to identify the situations which are often associated to procrastination and do something about it.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      #2: Understanding Why Your Child Procrastinates<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Now that your children are able to recognise the signs of procrastination, they should learn to understand why<\/span> they procrastinate!<\/p>\n

      We have identified two main reasons which may explain why your child procrastinates.<\/p>\n

      #1 Reason: <\/u>Abundance of Distractions<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

      Distractions can be found all around us when we are doing something we find boring.<\/p>\n

      For your children, they probably find studying joyless and dread the moment when they are forced to read the contents of their textbook. At that instance, the temptation to procrastinate will be at its strongest.<\/p>\n

      Modern technology such as mobile phones or computers can serve as a source of procrastination.<\/p>\n

      When your child is about to study, parents should play a significant role in removing such temptations. This will create a conducive environment for your child to study and remain productive.<\/p>\n

      Such measures include the confiscation of phones<\/span> and using a parental lock<\/span> to deny your child access to the computer when he\/she is studying.<\/p>\n

      Re<\/u>ason 2: Lack of Motivation<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

      Motivation is a powerful tool to every student.<\/p>\n

      It can encourage your child to chase and achieve their dreams and aspiration, thus allowing them to be proud of their accomplishments. However, a lack of motivation is simply unfavourable as it causes your child to succumb to the temptation beckoned by procrastination itself.<\/p>\n

      As parents, spend time talking to your children and understand what motivates them to achieve their dream.<\/p>\n

      Everyone has their own unique ‘driving force’<\/span> and upon identifying our own spark, we are able tap on it and use it to motivate us to work harder.<\/p>\n

      So, help your children to identify their own ‘driving force’ and once they have tasted the fruits of their labours, they will be more encouraged and will motivate your child<\/a> for more success in the future!<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      #3 Adopt Strategies Which Discourage Procrastination<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Procrastination is a habit and as such, it is challenging to overcome this overnight.<\/p>\n

      The act of procrastination is deeply ingrained in one’s behaviour and as such, many of us are guilty of it without even knowing that we are procrastinating.<\/p>\n

      Such bad habits are only broken when we persistently act against it. Encourage your children to develop their own unique approach to overcome procrastination. By doing so, your children can rely and practise the techniques they have developed to increase their productivity every day.<\/p>\n

      Hence, this allows them to be able to feel a sense of accomplishment every night before they sleep!<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Here are some tips to motivate your kids:<\/span><\/h2>\n
        \n
      1. Promise a suitable reward for your child upon completion of a task given. The greater the task, the larger the reward.<\/li>\n
      2. Introduce the spirit of friendly competition among your children. The competitive nature within them can serve as a driving force for them to be motivated in completing their respective objectives to the best of their abilities!<\/li>\n
      3. Allow your child to recognise and realise the unpleasant consequences procrastination brings<\/li>\n
      4. Organise a study group for your child to be able to study with friends! Utilise the effect of peer pressure<\/em> to allow your child to be in a conducive environment to study in.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        In conclusion…<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Procrastination is certainly not ideal in any circumstance.<\/p>\n

        Despite its negative effect on our level of productiveness, we, adults are often guilty of such an act. It has become a detrimental habit that many of us are unable to overcome and the idea of procrastination does give us a sense of comfort, despite knowing the tasks we have to complete.<\/p>\n

        Thus, it is important to educate your child at this young age on the danger and negative impact of procrastination. When your children are able to identify their source of motivation which allows them to overcome procrastination and practise it on a daily basis, they will be able to cultivate such beneficial habits which will prove important and useful even during their adult life.<\/p>\n

        Identify. Understand. Strategise<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        By remembering and practising these 3 important steps we have mentioned, we are confident that your child will be able to finally overcome procrastination.<\/p>\n

        How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

        The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

        \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

        Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

        \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

        What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

        Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

        \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

        Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

        How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

        Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

        Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

        Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

        \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

        Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

        \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

        What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

        Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
