Life lessons are akin to battle scars – gathered and collected over time, through trials<\/em> and tribulations<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As parents, you will have at least a couple of decades of life experiences ahead of your growing teen. It\u2019s safe to say that sharing your most important life lessons can help your growing teen avoid potholes that you have stepped on and fell. This allows him\/ her to have a headstart in life.<\/p>\n

    Of course, it will be impractical to sit your teen down and walk him\/ her through your whole life till present. Unless your life is as interesting as the comedy How I Met Your Mother<\/em> \u2013 even so, people eventually got relatively bored of the show \u2013 your restless teenage daughter or son will probably only afford you 15 minutes at most \u2013 sadly a generous approximation.<\/p>\n

    Think of five life lessons<\/em>! If you are fast enough, you may be able to finish it in 15 minutes \u2013 you may have to forget about catching your breath.<\/p>\n

    The following are some possible life lessons that may be reflective of your own.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

     #1: Listen To Your Heart <\/span><\/h2>\n

    In present times, choices are mostly governed by social norms and influences. Not many are able to step out and declare that they have followed their heart\u2019s desires. It is important to always give your rising teen<\/a> the courage to pursue his or her passion and what he\/ she really likes.<\/p>\n

    Many missed the point that success and passion are just disguise of one another. Notable figures of our modern society like Jack Ma and Steve Jobs famously shared similar views. Their overwhelming passion to better the world has led to revolutionary features in which extreme wealth was merely a subset of their brilliance.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    #2: Cherish The Present<\/span><\/h2>\n

    This is admittedly harder said than done.<\/p>\n

    As adults and parents, you may often dwell in the past and worry about the future. Unfortunately, this is not ideal. Perhaps by preaching this value to your growing teen, it will act as a constant reminder to yourself. The importance of cherishing the present has become somewhat of a clich\u00e9 (or rather a corny catchphrase), but it is ever so true. The only thing you can do once the moment is gone is to remember it.<\/p>\n

    Teach your teenager to stop, experience, soak in and live in the moment, for the moment. Live today and live it well so there will be no regrets tomorrow!<\/p>\n

    #3: Learn To Interact <\/span><\/h2>\n

    The advent of smartphones and tablets has led to a somewhat introverted way of life. People communicate through these technological platforms. This trend is ever so prevalent among teenagers whose generation was caught in midst of the technological big bang.<\/p>\n

    Communicating face-to face has seem to become the vestige of the past. However, it still remains an essential skill in life. It is therefore important to teach your growing teen how to do so and express what he\/she wants and how he\/she feels.<\/p>\n

    Teaching your growing teen the skill of listening will also put him in good stead in the future. Listening is a skill \u2013 almost criminally – undervalued. Only through listening can one truly learn. Most problems occur when people are too impatient<\/em> to listen and it is a common problem among teens today.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    #4: Stay Positive <\/span><\/h2>\n

    An important life lesson to inculcate to your growing teen is to stay positive and optimistic.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s safe to say that everyone has encountered challenges and obstacles in life, the only difference is that some face more challenges than others. Ups and downs are inevitable. The only way to deal with it is to learn to be optimistic and stay positive.<\/p>\n

    It is very easy to give up but it is difficult to smile and just move on. Teach your teenager to be thankful for the things he\/she have and not to take things for granted. At the same time, it is essential that your teenager learns to work hard for the things he\/she wants and desires. Never give up and things will come through.<\/p>\n

    Success belongs not to the talented but the resilient!<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    #5: Self-belief<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Teach your growing teen to have faith and believe in himself\/herself.<\/p>\n

    Do not be overly affected by the opinions of others as they are rightly entitled to their own. Teach your children to work towards their<\/strong> goals<\/u><\/span> and always keep faith, even in face of failures after failures. Only through self-belief will they learn to be confident and resilient. Once developed and inculcated, it is a trait that will be stuck with them for life and will certainly serve them well in the future to come.<\/p>\n

    One last note\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

    These life lessons are crucial to your teen\u2019s development. Every parent wants their children to grow up with the right attitude and view towards life. These lessons go a long way in shaping your growing teen\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

    Once inculcated, these are values that will be engraved in their minds forever and for future generations to come.<\/p>\n

    How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

    The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

    Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

    Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

    Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

    How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

    Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

    What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

    Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
