Time always seem to be running out for us! As working adults, we often experience stress due to a \u2018lack of time\u2019<\/u><\/em> on a daily basis as we attempt to complete certain tasks or projects by its stipulated deadline. We are all too familiar with the unfavourable consequences brought upon by poor time management. Poor time management will cause us to rush through our work in a bid to complete it before the dateline given and this compromises the quality of it.<\/p>\n

    So as parents, you may wonder whether your children are going through the same thing and whether they can manage their time effectively.<\/p>\n

    Are your children diligently planning their day but still face difficulties in meeting their respective deadlines?<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

    We understand the importance of effective time management<\/a>! It is indeed discouraging when you see your children trying their best in practising good time management but are not obtaining the desirable results they expect. This may be due to some common mistakes they are potentially committing but are unaware of. We are going to share with you the 3 common mistakes<\/u><\/strong> that your children can possibly commit!<\/p>\n

    \u2018Never say that you do not have enough time! We all are given the same amount of time within a day as Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Issac Newton, etc\u2026\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

    #1 Mistake: Taking on Too Many Tasks<\/span><\/h2>\n

    A common mistake your children might make when planning their timetable is to overload their day with too many activities!<\/p>\n

    It is delightful to see that your child makes an effort to maximise the amount of work to complete each day. However, after some point, your children may be overloaded and may face difficulties in completing their respective tasks. This often results in a build-up of stress accompanied by a decrease in effectiveness within your children\u2019s schedule!<\/p>\n

    As parents, you should guide your children and teach them the following to prevent overloading:<\/p>\n

    1. Learn To Say \u201cNO!\u201d <\/span><\/h3>\n

    Sometimes, it can be difficult for your children to reject a request from their friend as it may seem impolite. Teach your children to priortise and set their own boundaries and limits! Your children should only agree to help when they are certain that they have the time and effort to spare.<\/p>\n

    2. Ask For Help!<\/span><\/h3>\n

    This could be difficult for many of us as we often deem it as a sign of weakness. But at times, your children may not be able to cope with the tasks at hand. Hence, encourage them to reach out for help when necessary.<\/p>\n

    3. Plan Sufficient Breaks In Between!<\/span><\/h3>\n

    When your children are arranging their timetable, encourage them to spare some time for breaks in between activities! This is important as it gives your children the opportunity to rest and recharge themselves! As a result, they are able to increase their productivity as they attempt to complete their next task.<\/p>\n

    #2 Mistake: Being Busy But Ineffective<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Have you ever witnessed your child being occupied the whole day but are unable to accomplish his\/ her respective work within the stipulated deadline? <\/span><\/p>\n

    It can be extremely frustrating as their day is deemed unproductive despite the effort they put in! This is due to your children prioritising work that are of less importance and placing aside tasks which require their immediate attention. They often keep themselves busy with low-priority activities which may not be useful and this distracts your children\u2019s goal in accomplishing work which requires greater urgency!<\/p>\n

    The solution to such issues is simple<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

    Encourage your children to keep a timetable and note the activities they require to complete along with its respective deadlines and importance. By ranking such activities, your children can now recognise the urgency of each task and understand where their priorities should be placed.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    #3 Mistake: Stop Multi-Tasking!<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Beware! The act of multi-tasking is often counter-productive!<\/em><\/p>\n

    Many students view the act of multi-tasking to be an efficient mean of \u2018killing two birds with one stone\u2019<\/em>. However, multi-tasking simply provides a false illusion and often results in your children spending more time in accomplishing each task! It often leads to an increase in stress, greater tendency to procrastinate and being less productive.<\/p>\n

    Multi-tasking also serves as a source of distraction for your children! When struggling to complete both tasks, your children will not be able to place their full focus in any of it. As a result, the quality of the work may be compromised as your children would have a higher tendency to veer off course and get distracted!<\/p>\n

    Encourage your children to complete one task at a time. This way, they are able to fully place their focus on the task at hand and finish it quickly and efficiently! It is better to be able to complete a single task than to attempt to multi-task both and end up not completing any.<\/p>\n

    Having good time management is an important skill.<\/p>\n

    Like many other skills, practice makes perfect! It is indeed encouraging to see your children attempting to increase their productivity by practising good time management. However as parents, you should guide your children and allow them to be aware of the common mistakes many students are guilty of committing!<\/p>\n

    When your children attempt to complete certain activities, always provide them a conducive environment to do so! By having a workplace which is both tranquil and silent, it allows your children to stay focus as it removes all potential distractions around them! It gives your children the clarity of thought when working and as such, improving their productivity.<\/p>\n

    How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

    The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

    Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

    Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

    Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

    How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

    Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

    What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

    Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
