However, if you find out that your child has really been bullied in school, how are you going to deal with the whole matter?<\/p>\n

Many students and even parents do not know what to do when they encounter such a problem.<\/p>\n

    Tips For Parents To Counter Bullying<\/span><\/h2>\n

    #1 Provide comfort and reassurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your child will often be reluctant to reveal to you that he\/she is getting bullied.<\/p>\n

    Hence, when your child finally decides to reveal to you that he\/she is getting bullied, praise him\/ her for doing the right thing by confiding with you.<\/p>\n

    Explain to your child that this is part of growing up and a lot of people get bullied at some point.<\/p>\n

    Highlight to your child that the fault does not lie with him\/ her but with the bully.<\/p>\n

    Lastly, provide reassurance that he\/ she is not alone and you will resolve the issue.<\/p>\n

    #2 Understand that there is no one-size-fits all approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Upon finding out that your child has been bullied, being parents, you will definitely feel angry and upset with the bully.<\/p>\n

    However, learn to control your emotions and not take things into your own hands by confronting the bully.<\/p>\n

    There are many examples of bullying which are of different magnitude.<\/p>\n

    Different approaches have to be used in different contexts based on the severity of the issue and the age of the kids involved.<\/p>\n

    For example, you will not want to complain to the bully\u2019s parents if the issue is too small.<\/p>\n

    Hence, you should find out more about the specific details of the issue from your child before deciding the best course of action.<\/p>\n

    #3 Seek support from teachers if school rules are broken<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If you find out that the bully has went overboard and broke some of the school rules, let the teachers in the school know about the situation.<\/p>\n

    They are in a better position to monitor and take appropriate steps to prevent further problems.<\/p>\n

    #4 Speak to the bully\u2019s parents if necessary<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If the case of bullying is extremely serious and has gotten physical, inform the school immediately.<\/p>\n

    However, if the matter still persists, speak to the parents of the bully.<\/p>\n

    Try to do it in the presence of a school official because it is important to let the school know what is going on.<\/p>\n

    #5 Contact legal authorities as a last resort<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Hopefully things do not come to this stage but if nothing is changed after you have done the aforementioned 4 steps, contact the legal authorities.<\/p>\n

    Tips For Parents To Counter Bullying<\/span><\/h2>\n

    #1 Speak to the bully<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If you are not afraid of the bully, learn to speak up for yourself.<\/p>\n

    Tell the bully that you are feeling upset by his\/ her actions and demand that he\/she stops immediately otherwise you will be left with no choice but to complain to the teacher.<\/p>\n

    Complain to your teacher if the bully refuses to relent. Do not be afraid of the bully calling you a coward for doing so.<\/p>\n

    Remember, the bully\u2019s fear for higher authority is greater than your fear for him \/her.<\/p>\n

    #2 Do not respond with violence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    It is inevitable to feel angry when you get bullied.<\/p>\n

    However, learn to control your emotions and not use violence to resolve the matter.<\/p>\n

    Always remember that two wrongs do not make a right!<\/p>\n

    #3 Do not self-reproach<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The bully will often make you feel lousy or weak.<\/p>\n

    Do not blame yourself. Bullies sometimes have no reason to bully others.<\/p>\n

    It is not your fault that you have been picked on.<\/p>\n

    #4 Tell your parents<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If you are afraid to confront the bully yourself, find someone you trust such as your parents and tell them your predicament.<\/p>\n

    The person you tell will be able to help you deal with the matter better.<\/p>\n

    This is because when a person is afraid, he\/she will not be able to do the sensible thing as fear will cloud his\/her thinking.<\/p>\n

    #5 Tell your teacher<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If you realise that the bully has crossed the line and violated some school rules, complain to your teachers.<\/p>\n

    You do not have to be afraid of any consequences.<\/p>\n

    School rules are there for a reason so always remember that you are protected by them.<\/p>\n

    Tips for children to prevent bullying in future<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Bullies are cowards who selectively choose their victims.<\/p>\n

    Trends have shown that bullies often pick on those with weaker character. This is because these people will provide less resistance to the bullies.<\/p>\n

    Hence, to prevent yourself from being an easy target, you should make adjustments to your character. Try to be more<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Confident<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 If you are confident, you will give others the impression that you are in control of everything. Therefore, bullies will think twice about trampling over you.<\/li>\n
    2. Have a higher self-esteem<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 If you do not respect yourself, how do you expect others to respect you?<\/li>\n
    3. Assertive<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 By showing others that you are a firm person, you give people the impression that you fight for what you think is right and will not succumb to the fate of getting bullied.<\/li>\n
    4. Sociable<\/u><\/strong> – Bullies often pick on those who have very few friends. If you have a group of friends who supports you, bullies will avoid picking on you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Today\u2019s Question:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n
      How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

      The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

      \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

      Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

      \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

      What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

      Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

      \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

      Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

      How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

      Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

      Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

      Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

      \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

      Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

      \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

      What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

      Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
