If anyone asks us what we fear most when we were students, many of us would probably scream the word ‘EXAMINATIONS!<\/span>\u2019. We should still be able to recall the awful memories of sleepless nights and endless studying during our examination period very vividly.<\/p>\n

    As parents, you probably strive to provide the most conducive environment for your children during their examination period because you are able to relate the stress your little ones are experiencing with yourself. However, such preparations are in vain if your studious children are not able to properly manage their time during their respective papers!<\/p>\n

    Poor time management<\/a> during examinations can affect their overall performances. This will cause all the effort put in by your children to be in vain.<\/p>\n

    We are here to share with you 3 incredibly helpful tip<\/span>s<\/span><\/span> in allowing your children to have better management of their time<\/a>. These tips will improve upon their performance during exam!<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip 1: Understand The Structure Of Your Paper<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Do your children understand the format of their papers? Do they know the number and types of questions they are required to answer?<\/p>\n

    All these may seem obvious to all but you will be surprised that some students are still clueless about this.<\/p>\n

    Please also note that the structure of the paper your children will be sitting for may not be the same as past year\u2019s one! There are cases where there may be a change of syllabus or examination format. This is unlikely but it is always better to be safe than to be sorry!<\/p>\n

    Hence, remind your children to double check with their school teachers regarding this! This allows your children to understand the format of their paper. This enables them to be able to efficiently plan their time and roughly gauge how much time they will require to complete the paper if it is easy or difficult.<\/p>\n

    In addition, during the examination itself, when your children is unsure of the given instructions, discourage them from assuming. Your children should seek clarification with the invigilators to prevent any unnecessary loss of marks.<\/p>\n

     <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Tip 2: Attempting Time Trials<\/span><\/h3>\n

    After confirming that the structure of the examination is the same as previous years, your children should start doing past years\u2019 papers and other school\u2019s preliminary papers.<\/p>\n

    However, simply attempting these papers is insufficient. Your children should learn to attempt these papers under time constraint to get a \u201cfeel\u201d of what they are going to experience during the \u201creal\u201d examination.<\/p>\n

    This also allows your children to be more prepared for their upcoming examinations and reinforce the content they have learnt. Practice makes perfect and practising can instil confidence within your children!<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip 3: Devise a Plan to Divide Your Time <\/span><\/h3>\n

    When sitting for examinations, one of students\u2019 main fear is the lack of time to complete all the questions! Not being able to complete the paper is brought about by failure in devising a proper plan when approaching the paper.<\/p>\n

    When We Fail To Plan, We Plan To Fail.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    When examinations begin, always encourage your children to skim through their examination paper! This allows your children to have a rough idea of the difficulty of the paper. This process should not take longer than 2 minutes as the purpose is simply to gauge the feasibility of certain questions. With such information in mind, your children will then be able to generate an accurate time management plan!<\/p>\n

    Encourage your children to approach the paper in this way:<\/p>\n

    1) Complete simple questions first!<\/span><\/h4>\n

    These questions are seen as a ‘give away’ because they allow your children to gain marks from it easily. Hence, these questions should be completed first. Do not dedicate too much time to such questions as it should be completed as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

    2) Next, attempt questions which require more time to complete! <\/span><\/h4>\n

    These questions are probably questions which your children have not encountered before. Hence, they require critical thinking and a certain degree of application skills. Thus, it is more likely that more time is needed for completing these questions. Mark these questions with an asterisk on the side and only revisit them when the simpler questions have been completed.<\/p>\n

    3) Lastly, check your work!<\/span><\/h4>\n

    This step should be done last but it should always be compulsory nevertheless, especially when a student has additional time! It is important to check your work during an examination! Many students fail to see the importance of this step and only regret after receiving their grades back. Hence, it is important for your children to be able to plan time for revising through the paper after completing it in order to minimise loss of marks through careless mistakes.<\/p>\n

    In conclusion\u2026<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Practising good time management during an examination is essential.<\/p>\n

    Having the ability to answer all the questions during the examination should be every student\u2019s top priority because even if the answer provided is not entirely correct, there is a chance that method marks will still be issued! Hence, by attempting ALL questions, I firmly believe that a student\u2019s marks will be maximised.<\/p>\n

    Lastly, having a good night’s rest the day before an examination will allow your children to function in optimal condition for the paper. Late-night study should be discouraged as such measures prove to be counter-productive. This only increases the level of stress within your children. In addition, sleep deprivation prevents your children to be able to think clearly during examinations! As such, allow your children to be have enough sleep.<\/p>\n

    How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

    The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

    Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

    Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

    Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

    How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

    Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

    What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

    Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
