However, do ALL organisms need oxygen to survive, and if not, which organism does not?<\/p>\n<p>Do read on to find out! \ud83d\ude4a<\/p>\n\n<h2>Question Analysis<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at Q14.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853 alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/19P6SA2_ROSYTH_Q4-01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"991\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Source: Rosyth School \u2013 2019 P6 Prelim Examination Paper [Q14]<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Thought Process<\/h2>\n<p>Here is a brief summary of what this question is about:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>This is an <strong>experiment-based<\/strong> question on how the <strong>amount <\/strong>of <strong>dissolved<\/strong> <strong>oxygen <\/strong>in water affects <strong>various types of organisms<\/strong> in the water.<\/li>\n<li>The organisms are placed in two containers, <strong>one with<\/strong> <strong>more dissolved oxygen<\/strong> than normal and <strong>the other one with less dissolved oxygen<\/strong> than normal.<\/li>\n<li>Students are then asked to <strong>choose the option<\/strong> that best represents the <strong>number of organisms left in each container with different amounts of oxygen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After reading the question, does anyone have their answer in mind yet? For those with an answer in mind, were you all deciding between options (2) and (4)?<\/p>\n<p>If you did, am I right to say that your thought process is as follows?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/19P6SA2_ROSYTH_Q4-02.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"991\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For those of you who chose either (2) or (4) as the answer, sadly, <strong>both options are incorrect<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>What is wrong with the thought process above in answering this question?<\/p>\n<p>The crux is that you answered the question <strong>using your own knowledge<\/strong> and <strong>DID NOT use the information given in the question<\/strong>, leading you to apply the wrong concepts to this question.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, to avoid using the wrong concepts, I always advise my students to execute the following steps when tackling questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify and highlight the keywords\/key phrases in the question<\/li>\n<li>Link the keywords to the science concepts involved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Step 1: Identify &amp; Highlight The Keywords\/Key Phrases In The Question<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat are the important keywords\/key phrases in the question that we should highlight and look out for?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Give it a try and see if you can get the same keywords\/key phrases as me:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/19P6SA2_ROSYTH_Q4-03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"991\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ed1942;\">A<\/span> \u2013 \u201c<strong>Based on results\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #6fbe44;\">B<\/span> \u2013 \u201corganism <strong>A<\/strong> <strong>(triangle)<\/strong> is <strong>NOT affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2f5597;\">C<\/span> \u2013 \u201corganism <strong>B (square)<\/strong> is <strong>affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8a55a2;\">D<\/span> &#8211; \u201cpossible result for his <strong>conclusion<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2b50\ufe0f <strong>Tip<\/strong>: Highlighting keywords\/key phrases allows us to zoom in on the hints provided in the question, make inferences from the hints and answer the question accurately!<strong> \ud83d\ude0a<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Step 2: Link The Keywords\/Key Phrases To The Science Concepts Involved<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><u><span style=\"color: #ed1942;\">A<\/span> \u2013 <strong>Based on results<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on results\u201d is the key phrase to look out for in an experiment-based question.<\/p>\n<p>This key phrase allows us to identify the <strong>lessons<\/strong> learnt <strong>from the results<\/strong> of the experiment, which is also known as the conclusion of an experiment.<\/p>\n<p>What is the <strong>conclusion<\/strong> obtained from this experiment then?<u><br \/><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"color: #6fbe44;\">B<\/span> \u2013 \u201corganism <strong>A<\/strong> is <strong>NOT affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Since the conclusion is that <strong>organism A (triangle) is NOT affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, what result should I have obtained to come up with this conclusion?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853  aligncenter\" \u201corganism <strong>B<\/strong> is <strong>affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Since the conclusion is that <strong>organism B (square) is affected<\/strong> by the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, what result should I have obtained to come up with this conclusion?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/19P6SA2_ROSYTH_Q4-06.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"991\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"color: #8a55a2;\">D<\/span> \u2013 \u201cpossible result for his <strong>conclusion\u201d<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>What is a conclusion?<\/p>\n<p><em>As explained under key phrase <span style=\"color: #ed1942;\">A<\/span>, \u201cconclusion refers to the <strong>lessons<\/strong> that can be learnt <strong>from the results<\/strong> of the experiment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since we have identified the conclusion of this experiment from key phrases <span style=\"color: #6fbe44;\">B<\/span>\u00a0and <span style=\"color: #2f5597;\">C<\/span>, and we have also inferred the corresponding experiment results based on the conclusion, we will now proceed to choose the correct option.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final Analysis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As identified from above, since the <strong>number of organism A (triangle)<\/strong> should <strong>stay the same<\/strong> in the two containers with different amounts of dissolved oxygen, we can eliminate options (2) and (4).<\/p>\n<p>Also, since we have identified from above that the <strong>number of organism B (square)<\/strong> should be <strong>different<\/strong> in the two containers with different amounts of dissolved oxygen, we can then eliminate option (1) as well.<\/p>\n<p>The correct answer will then be option (3).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Do ALL Organisms Need Oxygen For Survival?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Remember I shared at the start of the blog post that I was going to reveal whether ALL organisms need oxygen for survival?<\/p>\n<p>As of a few years ago, the answer was still a \u201cyes\u201d, as all of us believe to be so.<\/p>\n<p>But from the year 2020 onwards, be prepared to be mind blown: the answer is now \u201cNO\u201d! \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n<p>Just in the year 2020, one special organism that does not need oxygen for survival was finally discovered!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-240853  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/19P6SA2_ROSYTH_Q4-04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Spores of the parasite <em>H. salminicola<\/em> swimming under a microscope<\/p>\n<p>This organism is named <em>Henneguya salminicola<\/em>, an 8-millimeter white parasite that infects the flesh of Chinook salmon.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it does not even breathe at all and can still survive!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u26a0\ufe0f<\/span> Note<\/strong>: The knowledge of this organism is <strong>NOT<\/strong> in the PSLE syllabus.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of the PSLE syllabus, students should still take it as <strong>all living things need oxygen to
