For a seed to develop into a seedling, it will have to undergo germination.<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember the 3 conditions needed for a seed to germinate? All you need to remember is <strong>WOW<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>W<\/strong> &#8211; Water<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>O<\/strong> &#8211; Oxygen<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>W<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; Warmth<\/p>\n<p>We were taught that food is made by the leaves through photosynthesis.<\/p>\n<p>However, when the seed germinates, it has yet to develop its true leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it: Where does the seed get its food from?<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Source of food in a seedling (before true leaves are formed)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beneath the seed coat lies the seed leaves where it stores food.<\/p>\n<p>Food in the seed leaves is used in the process of respiration to release energy for the growth of the seedling.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Source of food in a seedling (after true leaves are formed)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The seedling continues to grow and soon develops its true leaves where it no longer depends on the seed leaves for food.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, examiners are fond of asking the question \u201c<strong>Why?<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong> Are you able to explain why the seedling no longer depends on the seed leaves for food?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong> The true leaves of the seedling contain chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll to trap sunlight for photosynthesis to make its own food.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-also\">\n<h3>Read Also:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/plant-cycle-the-dilemma-of-the-stomata\/\">Plant Cycle: The Dilemma of the Stomata<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tpl.digital\/p5-p6-sps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultimate Science Practice Series: Plant Cycle (Practice Questions &amp; Explainer Videos)<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Now, let\u2019s go deeper and analyse the parts of the plant at various stages.<\/h2>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-238554\" src=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Roots.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Roots.png 345w, https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Roots-89x150.png 89w, https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Roots-178x300.png 178w, https:\/\/thepiquelab.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Roots-334x565.png 334w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Roots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When the seed first germinates, the roots will grow downward first to <strong>absorb water and mineral salts from the soil<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>anchor the plant firmly to the ground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Water absorbed by the roots will be transported upwards to the rest of the plant. The roots will also receive food from the seed leaves for respiration to release energy.<\/p>\n<p>With reference to the diagram above, the food in the seed leaves, which are above the roots is\u00a0<strong><u>transported downwards<\/u><\/strong> to reach the roots.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Shoot<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At this stage, the seedling has yet to develop its true leaves. Hence, it is unable to trap sunlight for photosynthesis to make its own food. The true leaves contain chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll to trap sunlight for photosynthesis to make food.<\/p>\n<p>The movement of food would be in <strong><u>an upwards and downwards direction<\/u><\/strong> to reach all parts of the plant.<\/p>\n<p>How about the movement of water in the plant?
