    Although all parents will always try to act<\/span> in their child\u2019s best interest, many often act without realising the impact they are creating on their child\u2019s growth. To prevent your child from having low self-esteem, pay attention to the mistakes below, which many parents are guilty of committing.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip #1: Do not get impatient with your child<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Understandably, many parents will get impatient with their child at some point. However, it is important to not get impatient when it comes to your child\u2019s learning and understanding abilities. When tutoring your child or addressing your child\u2019s queries about school or just general knowledge, it is important to answer their queries thoroughly\u00a0and\u00a0patiently. When faced with a hostile and impatient<\/strong><\/em> reaction, your child may associate his or her curiosity with negativity, which greatly inhibits his or her confidence in asking questions. This may prevents your child from learning from his or her mistakes<\/a>. Furthermore, your impatience with your child\u2019s lack of ability to learn quickly and comprehensively sends a negative message to your child; that he or she is not smart enough. Such thoughts may manifest themselves into more confidence issues<\/strong> and even self-fulfilling prophecies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip #2: Do not compare your child with other kids<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Most parents are definitely guilty<\/em> of this. A common topic between most working adults in their workplace or between relatives at a family gathering is the comparison of their child\u2019s performance in school.<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cWhy are you not doing as well as Aunty Pamela\u2019s daughter? She is getting 90 marks for all her papers but you are only getting 80!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    While you are trying to assess the competition and your child\u2019s standing with the rest of Singapore, it is important to note that such comparisons are harmful<\/strong> and inaccurate<\/strong>. Often, comparisons are made between individuals of different schools and different levels, where the marking style of the teachers and difficulty of the exam papers greatly differ from one another. To judge your child\u2019s performance based on such unequal scales<\/strong> may inevitably make your child feel inadequate when he or she does not \u201cperform as well\u201d <\/span>as his or her peers. Also, parents do need to realize that each child develops intellectually at different rates, where some are early-bloomers while some gain momentum late. These unfair comparisons may discourage your child from excelling<\/strong> and may even convince your child that you favour his or her smarter peers.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip #3: Do not look down on your child\u2019s abilities<\/span><\/h2>\n

    While this is a given, many parents do not realise that they are in fact guilty of this. Saying \u201cAiya, my son is not as smart as you think.\u201d<\/em> in front of your child or answering to your child\u2019s request for rewards with \u201cYou think you can score A meh?\u201d<\/em> shows your child that you do not believe in his or her abilities, even if you may not mean it. Although it may appear trivial<\/strong> to you, these comments can continue to linger in the mind of your child, hurting his or her self-esteem and drive to succeed. Therefore, catch yourself before you try to appear \u201chumble\u201d before your friends and avoid doubting what your child can be capable of. (Of course, this does not mean that you should not give your child constructive criticism as that is important as well. Remember, it is how you choose to put things across.)<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip #4: Do not keep asking for more when your child\u2019s performance is already stellar<\/span><\/h2>\n

    \u201cMummy, I scored 97 Marks for my Maths exam paper! I scored the highest in class.\u201d \u201cOk, next time score higher.\u201d Most Singaporean parents need to learn one important lesson. Compliment your child!\u00a0<\/strong>Often, parents are not used to complimenting their child and resort to neutral comments that are unappreciative or comments that signal to their child that their achievements will never be enough. As extreme as it sounds, you may be developing your child into an individual who will never be adequate<\/em> in his or her own eyes. Instead of always asking for perfection, be contented with your child\u2019s superb performance and show appreciation.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Tip #5: Do not give up on your child\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

    I really cannot stress this enough. Giving up on your child is one of the worst things a parent can do. Avoid stomping away or yelling the words \u201cI give up!\u201d as you will be indirectly telling your child that he or she is not worthy of your attention and patience.<\/p>\n

    Finally\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

    There is a great difference<\/span> between constructive criticism and acts that can potentially harm your child\u2019s self-esteem. While it is important to avoid making your child feel inadequate, it is necessary to provide constructive criticism to aid your child in learning from his or her mistakes and improving him or herself. Think through before criticising and watch your tone. The difference in tone with the same sentence can send different messages.<\/p>\n

    Today\u2019s Question:<\/span><\/h2>\r\n
    How Should The Bulb Be Connected To The Circuit For It To Light Up?<\/strong><\/span><\/blockquote>\r\n

    The following question is commonly encountered by students during tests.<\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Question Credit: Anglo Chinese School (Junior)\/ 2015 Primary 5 SA1\/ Question 18<\/em><\/p>\r\nWe can see that the key difference between the four options is the connection of the bulb(s) in the circuit.\r\n

    Requirements Needed for a Bulb to Light Up<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n\r\nOne wire is connected to the metal casing & one wire is connected to the metal tip<\/u><\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a closed circuit<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen the wires in the circuit are connected to the metal casing and metal tip of the bulb, there is a closed (or complete) circuit with the bulb. Electricity will be able to flow through the filament, causing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    What Happens When Both Wires Are Connected To The Metal Tip\/Metal Casing?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nScenario #1: Both wires are connected to the metal tip<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

    Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal tip<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal tip of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nScenario #2: Both wires are connected to the metal casing<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\n

    \"\"<\/a>Example of a circuit when the wires are connected only to the metal casing<\/em><\/p>\r\nWhen both wires are connected to the metal casing of the bulb, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n\r\nNow, let us now take a look at the question again.\r\n

    Analysis Of The Options<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhen analysing the circuits, students need to take note of one key point:\r\n

    How is the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\nIn the following analysis, I have traced the pathway that electricity flows through (in red) as well so that it is easier to understand why the bulb lights up.\r\n

    Circuit A<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the bulb are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filament, allowing the bulb to light up.\r\n

    Circuit B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\nOnly the tip is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nOnly the casing is connected to the circuit. Thus, electricity is unable to flow through the filament, preventing the bulb from lighting up.\r\n

    Circuit D<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\nBoth the metal casing and tip of the two bulbs are connected to the circuit, forming a closed circuit. Thus, electricity is able to flow through the wires in the circuit to the filaments, allowing the bulbs to light up.\r\n\r\nAs the bulbs in circuits A and D will light up, the correct answer is option 4.\r\n

    What We Have Learnt Today<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhen students wish to find out if the bulb will light up, they should check the following:\r\n

    Are both the metal casing and the tip of the bulb connected to the circuit?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\nIf the answer to the question is \u2018yes\u2019, the bulb will light up. :)\r\n\r\nIn the next blog post, I will be sharing about the advantages and disadvantages of arranging bulbs in series and in parallel.\r\n\r\nStay tuned! :)\r\n\r\n
